The value of commodities mined and quarried in New Zealand continues to increase – reaching record volumes and total dollar values for many commodities in 2005. The value of national Coal, Metals and Industrial Minerals production reached $1.347 billion; a $204.3 million (17.9%) increase on 2004 output values, the strong growth in production has been buoyed by increases in commodity prices and corresponding increases in investment expenditure.
2005 was a record year for New Zealand coal production. National coal production reached 5.267 million tonnes, 111,000 tonnes more than during 2004 and over 87,000 tonnes more than during 2003, when the existing record was set. Large production increases were registered in numerous mines, most notably in Solid Energy’s Stockton and Rotowaro opencast operations.
The value of coal mined in New Zealand during 2005 surged 23.2%, reaching a record $507.9 million. This exceeded the 2004 figure of $412.2 million by $95.7 million and illustrates the strong market value of New Zealand coals, both domestically and abroad.
Gold production in 2005 increased 4.3% to 10,583.2 kg (340,256 oz’s). Increased output from the Martha Hill operation (up 1137.36 kg – 36,567 oz’s on 2004 production) was largely responsible for this increase in national production. Output from the Macraes mine remained the largest in the country (5,198.62 kg – 167,138 oz’s). The total value of gold mined in New Zealand during 2005 reached $237.8 million, a 17.5% increase on the value of gold mined during 2004 and reflecting strong gold prices enjoyed during 2005.
2005 production of ironsands totalled 2,207244 tonnes, a 5.2% decrease on 2004 output. Production continued to remain high as a result of strong local and international demand for steel.
The total value of all industrial minerals produced in 2005 was $545.7 million, representing a $68.3 million (14.3%) increase from 2004. Total tonnage output for industrial minerals increased 10.4%, reaching a total of over 49 million tonnes.
Key increases were made in the production of; limestone for agriculture
(up 35.6% to 2.59 million tonnes), rock, sand and gravel for roading (up
13.7% to 24.7 million tonnes), rock, sand and gravel for fill (up 24.3% to
4.99 million tonnes) and decorative pebbles including scoria (production
more than trebling to 365,540 tonnes).
