The production of oil (condensate/naphtha) and gas hit record lows
during 2005. Oil production dropped to below 1985 levels, the year when
wells from the McKee field first contributed significantly to national
production. Net gas production dropped to levels not experienced since
the mid-to-late 1980's.
Despite the low production of hydrocarbons in New Zealand, activity in
the exploration sector is very high at present. In 2004 discoveries were
made in both the onshore and offshore Taranaki basin and a significant gas /
condensate discovery was made in the onshore Taranaki basin during 2005.
Petroleum mining permits were granted over the onshore Kauri and Windsor
fields and the offshore Tui-Amokura-Pateke and Maari fields during 2005.
During 2006 petroleum mining permits have already been granted over the
onshore Turangi and Cheal-Cardiff fields.
Production drilling has been completed on extended reach onshore wells
for the Pohokura development. First production scheduled early in the fourth
quarter 2006. Two further wells have been drilled from the Maui A platform
targeting gas / condensate accumulations in the Kaimiro Formation of the
Maui field. These were the first wells to be drilled from this installation
since 1979. Significant drilling programmes are in progress or have been
completed in the TAWN, Kaimiro, Ngatoro, Radnor, Cheal and Kauri fields.
Concurrent to this development / appraisal activity has been a continued
exploration effort both onshore and offshore. Offshore seismic acquisitions
have made in the Solander, Great South, Canterbury, East Coast and Taranaki
basins already during 2006. Numerous onshore seismic acquisitions have been
completed and onshore exploration drilling activity remains high. A nine
well offshore drilling campaign is expected to commence during the early
fourth quarter 2006 starting with the Cutter-1 exploration well in the
Canterbury Basin. Four of the nine planned wells will be drilled to develop
the +27mmbbl Tui-Amokura-Pateke field in the offshore Taranaki basin.
